Arlene Carol Ramsden

Arlene Carol Ramsden (nee Westrich) passed from this life to the next on January 28, 2022 in Greenville, NC. Arlene was the beloved wife to her husband, Stanley S. Ramsden, Sr., for nearly 63 years. They resided in Washington, NC, after retiring from Long Island, NY, twenty-six years ago.
Being a mother and taking care of her family was the priority of Arlene’s life. Her three children, their spouses, and three grandchildren, will miss her cookies, her laughter, and most of all, her love given to them by Arlene.

Arlene was born August 28, 1939 in Brooklyn, NY, to Alfred and Irma (Trautman) Westrich; her mother passed away two months after her birth. Alfred remarried and to this union was born Arlene’s sister Barbara and brother Alan. After graduating from Island Trees High School in Levittown, NY, she began work as a secretary at the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation. There she met her husband, Stan, and they married a
couple of years later on May 9, 1959. In the following year, they welcomed their daughter, Karen. Stanley Jr. followed two years later, and youngest son, John Maclaren, was born in 1966. The family moved after ten years from Lindenhurst, NY, to Brightwaters, NY, where the children grew up and graduated from Bay Shore High School.

Arlene and Stan participated in many activities over the years including dinner parties with friends, gardening, the Gourmet Club, cruising and traveling, as well as boating and sailing. They were members of the Bay Shore Yacht Club for many years before retiring and moving to Washington, NC. They also maintained a second home at Stan’s family’s farmhouse in Belmont, VT, where Stan spent a lot of time during his childhood. It’s a special place to them in their hearts as it is where they became engaged and their children also grew up enjoying the country life.

Arlene and Stan enjoyed spending many lazy summers in Belmont with family and visiting friends. In Washington, Arlene and Stan made friends, played cards, attended dinner parties, traveled and enjoyed the water and sailing and boating on the Pamlico River. In recent years, life slowed down for this couple, but Arlene still made special cookies for Stan, as well as other treats; at Christmas she was known for baking, and the treats would grace the tables of their friends as well as their family. Arlene relished the time she spent with her children and grandchildren and would go to great lengths to find them the perfect something for their birthdays or Christmas. She was always willing to help her family whenever a need arose.

This past year, she and Stan enjoyed a Christmas with their family, and returned to Washington, NC, after New Year’s Day. However, after a couple of weeks home, Arlene suffered an illness which resulted in her passing away, with Stan by her side.

Arlene was predeceased by her mother Irma; her father Alfred and stepmother Bea; her beloved in-laws Helen and Earl Ramsden, and her baby brother Alan just a couple of years ago. Surviving Arlene are her husband Stan; her daughter Karen and husband David and grandson Clay; her son Stan Jr. and wife Joyce and granddaughters Jamie and Katie; and her son John and wife Mary.

Final interment is planned in Belmont, Vermont, during this coming summer.

A memorial service to celebrate Arlene’s life will be held 3:30 pm, Saturday, February 5, 2022 at Joseph B. Paul Funeral Service.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm until the service hour at the funeral home.
