Caleb Joseph Gauvin, 29, formerly of Catawba County, currently of Washington, NC passed away on November 20, 2022 due to fentanyl poisoning. Caleb was a generous, kind, and caring soul, who just wanted to forget about bad times and bad feelings by relaxing, having a good time, and feeling good, as so many do. Unfortunately, one good time led to another, and November 20th was one good time too many, when Caleb lost his life to a substance laced with fentanyl.

Caleb had blond hair, sparkling blue eyes, and a mischievous chuckle. He stubbornly stood up for what he thought was right and fair, even as a young child. We wish he recognized how amazing and worthy he was. He loved fishing with his twin brother, loved working with his hands, and most of all, he loved spending time with his daughter. He wanted to be the father he never had, for her to be proud of, and to watch her grow and thrive into the beautiful young woman he knew she will be.

Caleb is survived by his mother, Leilla Gauvin, his brothers Jesse (Rachel) Gauvin and Aaron Boudreaux, his sister Sarah (Reece Baker) Boudreaux, and his princess, his daughter, Eden. He is also survived by his nephew, Aiden Wells, and nieces Rose (Ryan) Gresham and Scarlett Gauvin.

Caleb’s family does not want his death to be in vain. This can happen to anyone, to any family. Please seek counseling if you are dealing with trauma. You are not supposed to be able to handle it on your own, and doing so can lead to addiction. If you are going to use, please purchase test strips so that you can check for fentanyl before you use any substance. Anything can be laced. Also, if you suspect any member of your family may be at risk of overdose or fentanyl poisoning, keep Naloxone/Narcan on hand.

Last, but not least, know that North Carolina’s 911 Good Samaritan law states that individuals who experience or witness an overdose and seek help for the victim can no longer be prosecuted for possession- so please, call 911 if you suspect someone is overdosing.

A visitation for Caleb will be held Saturday December 10, 2022, from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm at Joseph B. Paul Jr. Funeral Service in Washington, NC.

Joseph B. Paul Jr. Funeral Service is honored to be assisting the Gauvin family.

Thank you for your candid obituary, and I hope readers will take it to heart. We lost my niece from an accidental fentanyl overdose as well on 7-28-18. She would’ve turned 30 on Christmas Eve. 🙏
