George Gardner Sugg

October 23, 1925 - August 3, 2023
George Gardner Sugg

George Gardner Sugg, beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on August 3, 2023. He was born on October 23, 1925, in Pitt County, NC, and was blessed with a long and fulfilling life of 97 years.

Born and raised in Grifton, NC, George grew up surrounded by the beauty of his hometown. He attended Grifton High School and went on to pursue higher education at The Citadel Military College in Charleston, SC, before answering the call of duty to join the Navy during World War II. George proudly served in the South Pacific on the battleship USS North Carolina, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to his country.

Upon returning home, George continued his education, attending ECU (ECTC) and carving a path for himself in the business world. He entered into a partnership with his uncle and together they owned and operated the Sport Shop in Grifton for forty years.

In his personal life, George found great joy when he married the love of his life, Edna Price Sugg, on June 6, 1953. They settled in Grifton, and later retired in Belhaven, where they spent countless memorable moments together. George had a passion for golfing, hunting, and fishing, consistently finding solace and connection with nature. These pastimes brought him immense happiness and created timeless memories.

George was a man of faith and was an esteemed member of Trinity Methodist Church in Belhaven. His devotion to his family, friends, and community reflected the values instilled in him by his loving parents, the late George Cicero Sugg and Joyce Gardner Sugg. He cherished the special bond he shared with his daughter, Nancy Sugg, as well as his brother and sister-in-law, Tommy and Jean Sugg, sisters Dorothy Reeves and Margaret Sugg, grandson George Travis Bright, step-grandsons; Dennis, Gregg and Neal Bright, great-grandsons Grady Blaine Bright and Jaxon Hughes, cousin Jane Harris, and family friend Elizabeth Hughes.

To honor the memory of George Gardner Sugg, a memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday August 12, 2023 at the Joseph B. Paul Jr. Funeral Home, officiated by Pastor Chris Noble with a reception to follow. Full military rites will be honored, paying tribute to his selfless service to his country.

George’s life was a testament to perseverance, kindness, and love. He touched the hearts of all who crossed his path and leaves behind a legacy of strength and inspiration. Though he may no longer walk with us, his spirit lives on in the cherished memories we hold dear.

May we find comfort in the knowledge that George Gardner Sugg has found eternal peace, forever guiding and watching over us from above.

What A Man! One was not in George’s presence very long without laughter ! I don’t remember ever seeing him without a smile on his face. He was so active you would never think of his age.
