Gwen Sears Cahoon, age 63, a resident of Swan Quarter, passed away Thursday, Nov. 11, 2021, at Vidant-Beaufort Hospital.

She was born to the late Napoleon Forest Sears and Helen Newton Sears on December 31, 1957 in Mecklenburg County, NC.

Gwen lived a great life. She attended the Pungo Christian Academy and graduated from Mattamuskeet school in June of 1977. Later, she went on to become a dental assistant, a clerk at the Hyde County Water Department, co-owner of local business Swan Quarter Appliance, Site Attendant at Swan Quarter Solid Waste, and even spent time in her younger years doing work for a local newspaper. Gwen was a well-known member of the community. Known by many as ‘Aunt Gwen,’. Few people around town were not a member of her extended family. A model employee at the Swan Quarter Solid Waste, Gwen also optimized operations and procedures at Ocracoke Solid Waste in ways that are still being practiced today. Always one to help the community, she was a frequent blood donor, as well as an organ donor. Ever up for a challenge, she once drag raced her ’74 Chevy Nova to victory

Along with her parents, Gwen was preceded in death by her husband Charles Roberts Cahoon and sister Myra S. Mutchler.
Gwen is survived by her survived by her children; Harry Jarvis III, Tommy Cahoon, Cadence Cahoon, siblings; Helen S. Cahoon, Jill S. Tunnell, half – sisters Paulette Sears, Charlotte Sears; 3 grandchildren; Breanna Jarvis, Austin Jarvis, and Isabella (Izzy B.) Jarvis; and 1 great grandchild, Aubrey Baughman
Her family will always remember her as a fearless mother, devoted grandmother, and doting great-grandmother.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Gwen was greatly loved by her family and her unexpected passing has devastated them.  They are left with many financial issues to deal with in the coming days and weeks.  A donation will help the family deal with these expenses as they grieve the loss of their loved one may be made by clicking the link below.
