Jan Michael “Mike” Sikes, age 70 and a resident of Washington, died Sunday, April 17, 2022 at his home after a brave but brief battle with aggressive lung cancer.
On October 31, 2005 at Duke Medical Center, he received the most precious gift that anyone could receive, a heart transplant. Thanks to God for allowing us almost 17 extra years. He got to see and enjoy his three wonderful grandchildren, whom he loved dearly.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 at Joseph B. Paul Jr. Funeral Service in Washington and other times at the home in Washington. Funeral service will be held Thursday, April 21 at 11:00 am at Joseph B. Paul Jr. Funeral Service, conducted by Rev. Kevin Woolard. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. Noel Lee, Brian Dixon Sr., Tony Hoell, Bill Dawson, Anthony Bailey, Tandy Dunn, Jeremy Wallace and Shaun Carroll will serve as pallbearers. Members of the Clark’s Neck Volunteer Fire Dept. will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Mike was born in Whiteville, NC on January 17, 1952. He was the son of the late Raymond Sikes and Hazel Sikes Sessoms.
Mike worked as an electrician for over 25 years with National Spinning as long as his health permitted.
Mike was a member of Clark’s Neck Volunteer Fire Department for 33 years. He received Fireman of the Year in 1992 and 2000. He also received Beaufort County Fireman of the Year in 1992. He was on the Board of Directors at CNFD. He loved his fire department. He was an assistant coach in the Little Tarheel League, Junior Babe Ruth, and Washington girls’ softball.
On December 1, 1972, he married the former Betty Lou Asby of Aurora.
Survivors include his devoted wife Betty of nearly 50 years at the home, children Brad Sikes and wife Mary Ruth Sikes of Winterville, Gina Woolard and husband Brad Woolard of Chocowinity. He is also survived by grandchildren Trent Woolard of Charlotte and both Davis and Mary Grace Sikes of Winterville. They dearly loved their “Papa”.
Surviving siblings include his brother Jerry Sikes of Supply, NC; sisters Barbara Sikes of Bolton, NC and Sue Patterson of Sanford, NC; and sister-in-law Susan Sikes of Louisburg NC.
The Sikes family would like to give a special thank you to Community Home Care & Hospice for their help during this time of so much loss.
