Kenneth Ray Waters Sr., affectionately known as Kenny, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2023, at the age of 74. He was born on December 25, 1948, in Washington, NC, and his passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him.
Kenny had an illustrious career that spanned various fields, leaving an impact on those he served. After graduating Washington High School in 1968, he enlisted to serve in the Navy during the Vietnam War. Upon his return, Kenny dedicated himself to public service, spending several years as a Washington firefighter before joining the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office. During his two decades as a law enforcement officer, he passionately taught countless fifth graders the lessons of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program (D.A.R.E.), utilizing his knowledge and experience to educate and guide others towards better choices; ensuring the safety and well-being of his community for generations to come. In 2009, Kenny retired from the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office but continued working part-time even after retirement.
Kenny found solace and inspiration in the mountains of western North Carolina. Their vastness and beauty captivated his spirit, providing him with a sense of tranquility and perspective. He and his family vacationed there as often as possible.
Kenny’s devotion to his family was unwavering, and his passing leaves a void that will be deeply felt. He is preceded in death by his father, Dallas Wilton Waters, his mother Doris Dunbar Waters and his nephew Lee Waters.
