It is with great sadness that we mourn the sudden loss of Linda M. Hassell, a beautiful soul that now resides in her permanent home “paradise”. She was strong, and overcame many obstacles in life -most recently beating breast cancer. But God’s plan are all His, and on July 16, 2022 he decided that his child should be with him in Glory!

A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, July 22 at Harvest Church, 2020 W 15th St, Washington, NC with family visitation at 10:30 am  followed by a service at 11:00 am.

Born November 1, 1941 in Elizabethtown NC, she was the daughter of the late Daniel LaRue McQueen and Evelyn Wallace Harris of Elizabethtown NC.

She was married 58 years to her sweetheart Malcolm P. Hassell of Washington, better known as Bud or Papa. They were blessed with three children: Susan Hassell Bridgman, and husband Randy Bridgman (deceased) two sons Malcom Phillips Hassell, Jr and Jason McQueen Hassell both of Washington; she was the precious Granny to eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, along with many treasured nieces and nephews. She had one living brother: Wally McQueen (wife Virginia) of Elizabethtown NC, and deceased brother Robert Bennett McQueen of Elizabethtown NC.

She loved caring for others and was a registered nurse working for Washington Women’s Care (now ECU Health Women’s Care-Washington) for 30 years. She loved her co-worker and patients and served them with love and compassion. She cherished many friendships made from her years of working. She retired in 2014 to care for her husband and enjoy life.

“Granny” -as she was called by many- or “Poopsie” to a special few, was full of life and fun, never finding fault with anyone. To her family she was the “rock”; she was the one who kept the peace and loved each family member with all the love she could offer. She dutifully lent an ear to anyone who needed, while offering her wisdom and encouragement, leaving a person feeling understood and very special.

She loved her life on the peaceful Hassell farm and if it wasn’t too hot, she would enjoy chatting away with one of her many visitors. She had the gift of cooking and canning, and she was well known for her collards, strawberry jelly, and pickled okra, among other things. She loved all kinds of animals, especially dogs… keeping her company were her two little rescue dogs, “Peety” and “Spanky”. The love of her life, Buddy Hassell was her main concern, as she daily cared for him with lots of spoiling and attention. He will greatly miss her.

Recently she enjoyed watching her small new home being built, one that was well deserved for such a beautiful soul. Each day she watched construction workers come and go and never hesitated to bring them a cold soda or sandwich. It is with great sorrow that she left us before the home was finished.

Her love of the Lord was obvious. Her love for Him made her glow. Her faith filled her with kindness allowing her to offer grace and mercy to all who had a chance to encounter her. She was a special person who will be greatly missed by many; especially her grandchildren: Amanda Toler, Phillip Hassell, Sara Mac Hassell, Bennett Bridgman, Clara Winsor Bridgman, Bella Hassell, Gabby Hassell; great-grandchildren: Goldie Zane Hassell, Ava Paul, Ryder Toler, Eliza Jean Waters; Special nieces and nephew: Julie McQueen, Christopher Morlock, and Lorien Morlock.

Joseph B. Paul Jr. Funeral Service is honored to be assisting the Hassell family
