Lucy Rae Boyd Sullivan was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, December 17th at the age of 97. She passed away peacefully at her home in the presence of family.

“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” Romans 8:18

Lucy grew up on a farm in Pinetown, one of twelve children born to Thaddeus and Eva Oressa Boyd, where she learned the value of hard work at an early age. By the time she got married, she had 50 chickens of her own and was earning her own money by selling the eggs. She married John Henry Sullivan on July 17, 1945 and raised three children, Eva Carol, Donnie Ray, and John Henry Jr. She continued to work with her hands as a seamstress, tobacco, gardening, and growing a variety of grapes after getting married. She has interacted with many people in and around the area over the years, most notably by selling some of the best grapes in town and performing a plethora of sewing and alteration services for folks in the community.

Her love of sewing was shared with many, especially as she taught her grandchildren and great-grandchildren the art of sewing. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she made and gave away masks to anyone who needed them. She hand-embroidered pillows until the end of her life, sharing them with residents in many nursing homes and the cancer center. During her recent stay in a hospital, she would visit the other residents and gift them with one of these hand-embroidered pillows.

Lucy is preceded in death by her parents, Thaddeus Boyd and Eva Oressa Latham Boyd, her spouse John Henry Sullivan Sr. of 64 years, her brother Thaddeus Boyd Jr., and Daniel Boyd, her sisters Annie Myrtle Boyd Winstead, Callie Virginia Boyd Braddy, Mary Elizabeth Boyd Whitley, Bertha Blanche Boyd Congleton, and Lula Mae Boyd Woolard, and her great-granddaughter Sarah Lane Sauls.

She is survived by her brothers Rufus Boyd, Paul Boyd, and Mark Boyd, her sister Marcia Lee Boyd Hamilton, her children Eva Carol Sullivan Wainwright (Stanley), Donnie Ray Sullivan Sr. (Gale), and John Henry Sullivan Jr., her grandchildren Albert Sullivan Davis (Jamye), Teresa Lane Davis Sauls (Jamin), Donnie Ray Sullivan Jr. (Kathleen), Kevin Clark Sullivan (Jocelyn), Ryan Andrew Sullivan (Dia), and Amanda Adele Sullivan Lovin (Brian), and her great-grandchildren Katie Davis, Joanna Sauls, Rachel Sauls, Lydia Sauls, Lennon Sullivan, Hugo Sullivan, Grayson Sullivan, Zaiere Evans, Adisynn Dove, Preston Lovin, and Landon Lovin. The six grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

I have been thinking about Ms Lucy lately and am so sorry to see this obituary. I only regret that I didn't get to take her one more creme puff from Brownie's Bakery, we surely enjoyed those ! Ms. Lucy did many alterations for me before she had to stop and we forged a friendship through that. I will miss her and I pray for peace and comfort to the family. She is surely rejoicing in the presence of Jesus this Christmas.

I am sorry to see that Mrs. Lucy has passed. She was a sweet lady who hemmed many a pair of pants for me. I told her the first time I entered her home that it smelled just like my grandmama's house. I will think of her each time I pass by that house. My sympathy for the family's loss.

Carol, Donny and Henry, I never know what to say at passing of a family member, especially a parent. Took me 15 minutes to think of that! We loved our Aunt Lucy, she was very much like our mom (her sister). I regret I was unable to visit in more recent years. But many fine memories remain.
