Samuel Wilson Squires Jr. ( known affectionately as “Jock” or “Sammy”) , 72, a resident of Greenville NC, passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, February 22, 2023.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at Peace Chapel Free Will Baptist Church in Washington, NC at 11:00am, immediately following the visitation beginning at 10:00am, with other visiting hours at the family home.

Sammy was born in Beaufort County on January 14, 1951, to the late Samuel and Nellie (Koonce) Squires. Along with his parents he is preceded in death by four brothers: Wilson, Elmer, Frank, and Perry Squires; two sisters: Nina Paul and Pamela Harris.

He is survived by his wife Tereasa Squires; four brothers: Frederick Squires of Pantego, NC, Timothy Squires of Washington, NC, Freddy and Jack McGowan of Chocowinity, NC; three sisters: Ada Evans of Washington, NC, Trudy Hardy of Washington, NC, Magdeline VanGorden; three daughters: Jessica Carlyle and husband Ashley of Greenville, NC, Emily Squires of Greenville, NC, Tiffanie Gall and husband Kalen; one son: Gary Squires; five grandsons: Riley and Wyatt Wallace, Jaxson Gall, Landon Heath and Austin McGowan; five granddaughters: Kennedi Gall, Kortney Cutler, Nicole Ormond, Leslie and Morgan Heath; numerous nieces and nephews and a dear family friend: Melton Everett.

Sammy was a jolly man and any rooms in which he and his family congregated were dotted with the sounds of joking and the roar of boisterous laughter. He came from a large family – one of fourteen children- and had four of his own, with nearly a dozen grandchildren. There were always activities and fun to be had indoors or out. And he was indeed fond of the outdoors. He was equally at home in a copse of trees dressed in camo, as he was on the river trying not to tip his kayak over hauling in the days catch.

He was warm and caring and he always welcomed everyone. He was an active member of Peace Chapel Free Will Baptist Church in Washington, NC, where at various times he served as a deacon, trustee, chairman, usher, and Sunday School teacher.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Peace Chapel Free Will Baptist Church at 2480 W. 5th St, Washington NC 27889

Joseph B. Paul Jr. Funeral Service is honored to serve the Squires family.

    Blake Rouse says:
To the family of Sammy, it just seems not too along we were sitting in the fellowship hall at church and Sammy was always joking about something. He was always making somebody laugh about something while standing outside the sanctuary doors at church talking to people going in to find a seat. I'm going to miss seeing Sammy at church and speaking to him or just talking to him for a little bit. Even though he will be missed we know that's he's no longer suffering from cancer and all the other health problems that come in this life. Just remember Teresa and family God will give your family the strength to go through this. -Blake
