Susan Marie Bartelt, 59, a resident of Vanceboro, NC passed away at her home early Wednesday morning surrounded by her family.

A visitation will be held at Joseph B. Paul Jr. Funeral Service on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at 6:00-7:00pm, with the Memorial Service immediately afterward, from 7:00-8:00pm.

Susan is preceded in death by her father, Michael Hoherchak, and her mother, Leona Hoherchak. She is survived by her husband John Bartelt; a daughter, Brandi Bartelt and partner, Billy Walker; a sister, Carol Munley and husband Jerry Sr; a brother, Michael Hoherchak, Jr. and wife Patty; a brother, Paul Hoherchak and wife Debbie; a brother-In-law: Fred Bartelt and wife Carla; a granddaughter, Caroline Walker; a grandson, Billy Walker, Jr.; three nieces, Michele Munley and husband, Mark Schrum, Alyssa Bartelt, Hailey Wolf and husband Michael; two nephews: Michael Hoherchak, III, Jerry Munley, Jr.; a great-nephew: Levi Munley; a great-niece: Amelia Wolf, and a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins. Susan was born November 25, 1963, to the late Michael and Leona Hoherchak in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Jim Thorpe Area High School and Carbon County Vocational Technical School in 1982, majoring in The Commercial Arts, and was accepted at Julliard School of Theater for her exceptional singing voice and style.

In 1983 Susan married her high school sweetheart, John Bartelt, and that year they purchased the now famous ‘Sunrise Diner’ that was in the historical district of Jim Thorpe, PA. Their daughter, Brandi Bartelt was born in 1995. Susan treasured her stay-at-home time as a loving mother. The family relocated to several locations for John’s employment. They moved to Hamburg, PA., Harrisburg, PA., to Wilmington, NC., Bath, NC., Clayton, NC., and to Washington NC., Chocowinity, NC., New Bern, NC., Cove City, NC., and currently resides in Vanceboro, NC., while Brandi and her family reside in Washington, NC.

During these moves Susan expanded her working career as Lead Cake Decorator at Sam’s Club, Wilmington, NC., that motivated her to open her own specialty wedding cake business, Ann Marie’s Cakes.

While living on the Lane Farm in Cove City, she had a passion for rehabilitation of orphaned possums and racoons. Raising them to be released back into the wild. She always had a love for catch-and-release fishing. John was never surprised to find her down by the water.

Her life’s passions quickly changed with the birth of her two grandchildren: Caroline (6 years old) and Junior (4 years old). They became the joy of her life. She shared her love for arts & crafts, baking, animals, and the outdoors, always teaching them as much as she could.

Sadly, the fun times slowed because she developed chronic kidney disease to include home dialysis treatment for seven years. January of 2022 she was hospitalized for Covid-19 pneumonia lung failure and after her 13-month fight, she went in peace to be with the Lord.

She is loved and will be heartfully missed.
